Looking back over my education I only have positive things to say and believe I receive a top education from the small town public school I attended however I believe that a large part of my success at this school is the role I took in my education. Even from a young age I took an active role in my education and was driven to learn as much as I could and be successful. I cannot say the same about some of my peers. Everyday I watched students who just sat back and allowed their teachers to send knowledge to them but I did not see much engagement in the learning from every student in my school.
I do not see this same thing at ESM. What I see at ESM is how smart the students are and how actively engaged all the students seem to be. At ESM I see students, even young students, taking an active role in their education. The teachers do not stand in front of a classroom and talk to a room of young people. Instead they guide the students to learn through investigation. Often when I walk into my host classroom the students are scattered around the room all working on different things. The room is never quiet and to an outsider it may seem like chaos but I don't believe there is anything chaotic about the room. What I see after spending only a few hours there so far is a group of students who are all actively engaged in a variety of projects. The students are all doing activities that relate to something they are interested in or something they are reading in reader's workshop. What I see is the teacher guiding the students to be interested learning.
In the short amount of time I have spent at ESM so far I have started to develop my teaching philosophy. I know from my time at ESM that I want to be the kind of teacher who guides students to investigate their interests and to be actively engaged in their own education.
